Estimating the Effect of School Indoor Air Quality on Academic Outcomes Introduction

چکیده
4. Abstract: This paper examines the effect that indoor air quality has on academic outcomes. Understanding this relationship is important for two key reasons: first, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has consistently ranked indoor air pollution among the top five environmental health risks (EPA 1987); and second, almost 20% of U.S. schools, with more than eight million attending students, have reported having unsatisfactory indoor air quality (GAO 1995). While a number of studies have examined the effect of indoor environmental conditions in schools on students’ health, test performance, and absenteeism, many were poorly designed, lacked credibility, or obtained ambiguous results. This paper uses difference-in-difference estimation on a large sample of recently renovated schools in a U.S. school district. This robust estimation technique allows me to control for many of the confounding variables that may also affect academic outcomes. Preliminary results suggest that improved indoor air quality has a sizably positive and statistically significant effect on both attendance rates and academic performance.

The Contemporaneous Effect of Indoor Air Pollution on Cognitive Performance: Evidence from the UK
Mental acuity is essential to productivity in most professions and possibly associated with indoor air quality. Despite the empirical evidence on links between indoor air pollution and human health, the literature on the effect of indoor pollution on cognitive performance is exceptionally scarce. I examine this potential link using a sample of university final examination results from a British...

متن کاملExposure to Air Pollution and Pregnancy Outcomes in the East Mediterranean Region: a Systematic Review
The East Mediterranean region suffers from high levels of air pollution which has a negative impact on pregnancy outcomes. This work systematically reviews the epidemiological evidence on maternal exposure to air pollution and adverse pregnancy outcomes in the region. Relevant papers and reports published between 2000 and 2014 were searched. Combinations of search terms including countries, exp...

Introduction: In hair salons, workers and customers are exposed to high concentrations of several chemical compounds used during the working environment. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), particulate matter (PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and formaldehyde are the major chemicals that alter the indoor air quality. This study aimed to assess the indoor...
